This is what I realised as first legal hire at a fast-scaling tech company:

📌 You need clear priorities

📌 You have to align with the business’s goals

📌 You must know when to say no

Setting your Legal team’s goals is key to showing the value that Legal adds to the business's bottom line. Here’s how to do it:

Find out what the company’s goals are⁠
Align your legal team’s goals with the company’s (i.e the big picture)
⁠Work with key stakeholders to define your goals
⁠Document and share your team goals - make them visible
⁠Track progress and keep yourself accountable

✨ PRO TIP ✨ ⁠

Define your ‘non-goals’ - focus on what really matters and don’t be afraid to say no to what doesn’t align with your priorities.

REMEMBER: it’s totally okay if goals change—especially in a fast-paced environment, it’s inevitable.
