⛔️ 9 things to stop doing on day one as a first-time GC

As a first-time GC, you want to make an impact fast - but there are some traps that can slow you down.

Avoid these common mistakes, and you’ll set yourself up for success from day one.

1️⃣ Fixed mindset – Be open to new learning opportunities. Legal training makes you think intelligence is fixed - it’s not! Try new processes, take on projects outside your comfort zone, and reframe mistakes as learning, not failure.

2️⃣ Staying in your lane – Your colleagues want your views because you’re a smart, competent leader. Stop saying, “I’m not a tax lawyer, but…” Just answer the question - they assume you’ll gather the right facts first.

3️⃣ Being hard on yourself – You’re in this role because you add value. You’re not “less important” just because legal isn’t revenue-generating. If imposter syndrome kicks in, tap into a legal community for support.

4️⃣ Hiding! – Everyone will know who you are, even if you don’t know them. Some colleagues may be wary of legal - own your seniority, be proactive, and show you’re here to support, not just enforce.

5️⃣ Saying "NO" – No should be a last resort. In most situations, there’s a solution. Instead of shutting people down, try "yes, if…" + actionable steps - even if there are 25 of them!

6️⃣ Asking for more headcount – Don’t default to hiring. First, define processes, collect data, and automate or outsource repetitive work before requesting FTEs. Show how inefficiencies slow down business goals.

7️⃣ Making assumptions – Don’t assume you know what the business needs. Engage stakeholders, use data, and get buy-in. This builds trust and strengthens legal’s reputation.

8️⃣ Being too cautious – Yes, legal must balance risk, but business - especially scale-ups - is about taking risks. The business sets risk appetite. Don’t lose sleep if your advice isn’t followed!

9️⃣ Assuming your input isn’t valued – Don’t leave decisions to others when you can (and should!) give a business recommendation based on your legal analysis. People look to you as a leader - own it!
