NOW, for my top 3 AI prompting tips:
1️⃣ Treat the AI like a super eager legal intern (a smart, fast one)
AI works for you, and it’s trained on the entire internet. When I started prompting, I kept thinking that I needed to impress it, or get its approval to get the right answer (or the approval of the AI overlords…), but actually, it’s the other way round.
Now every time I sit down to prompt, I imagine I’m instructing a new colleague or someone junior.
You get a better output if you:
Give it clear, detailed instructions.
Make sure it constantly seeks your approval (a little brevity here - only bad managers treat interns and junior associates that way!)
Are specific: the more specific you are, the better its output.
2️⃣ Use a dedicated legal AI tool
General AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude are great while you're getting started and building up your confidence with AI, but they often fall short for legal-specific tasks because they are not designed with in-house legal use cases in mind.
They refuse to give legal advice, and struggle with web research and complex document analysis.
✨ PRO TIP: For precise, detailed work, skip to a higher level and use tools actually designed for in-house legal use cases (Check out Wordsmith AI)!
3️⃣ Always give context
AI is great at impersonating, and performs best when it understands the bigger picture. Provide as much detail as possible:
Who you are
Your company’s goals
Why the task matters
The content needs to be clear, actionable, and easy to understand. As with tip 1, this is what you would do with a new colleague or intern/junior associate, and AI should be treated with the same point in mind.
REMEMBER: Like most things in life, you get out what you put in. The better your prompts, the better the AI’s output.
YOU’RE INVITED!!

AI has exploded onto the in-house legal scene and is forcing us to rethink our approach to drafting and negotiating contracts by speeding up and revolutionising outdated processes.
This is hugely exciting, but also daunting, so to help you conquer using AI in your contracting processes once and for all, ITGC is hosting an interactive workshop on Wednesday 26 March taught by Laura Jeffords Greenberg (Head of AI Legal Academy, Wordsmith AI) and Lucy Tyrrell (GC, Wordsmith AI)!
Why you'll love this workshop:
1️⃣ Learn how AI is changing the contracting game to make your life simpler
2️⃣ Level up your AI skills to help speed up deal cycles
3️⃣ Have some fun with AI and your fellow in-house legal peers!
Together, we will use AI to:
✅ Review and redline a simple contract together
✅ Augment and speed up negotiating (using playbooks, creating issues lists and engaging business stakeholders without being a blocker)
We can't wait to see you! 🚀
